Science Translational Medicine Cover—14 September 2016
Cover illustration created for Rong Yang and the Kohane Lab at Boston Children's Hospital for their paper Treatment of otitis media by transtympanic delivery of antibiotics.
The illustration depicts the lab's hydrogel-based drug-delivery system used to treat otitis media, or ear infections. Traditional antibiotic treatments must be taken orally over 7-10 days and circulate throughout the body, potentially causing antibiotic resistance and other side effects. The lab's hydrogel-based system is applied only once to the tympanic membrane to deliver an entire course of antimicrobial therapy directly to the middle ear.
